So I had this idea earlier today...what if America's electoral college system used the Regions of Atlasia instead of states?

So I've spent the past couple hours on a Microsoft Excel file. In it, spreadsheets containing every single presidential election since 1968 to 2016. Each region's amount of electoral votes was decided by adding up the votes that each state (plus DC in the South's case) to a grand total. In every election, Frémont had the smallest total, and Lincoln had the largest. However, the way the math worked, each presidential candidate would always have to pick up at least 2 regions in order to surpass 270 electoral votes.

I uploaded the document to Google Sheets to make it viewable here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JiSzU3NhWHO0PIGn3Y9tr_9Uj77WfjdG52pT6iDDPu8/edit?usp=sharing

1968 - Nixon Wins 314-224
1972 - Nixon Wins 538-0
1976 - Carter Wins 406-132
1980 - Reagan Wins 538-0
1984 - Reagan Wins 538-0
1988 - Bush Wins 538-0
1992 - Clinton Wins 538-0
1996 - Clinton Wins 538-0
2000 - Gore Wins 337-201
2004 - Bush Wins 358-180
2008 - Obama Wins 332-206
2012 - Obama Wins 326-212
2016 - Clinton Wins 326-212

Interestingly, the popular vote winner always wins in the elections of which I've documented.

It makes sense —with only three regions, each with populations well into the tens of millions, the representation error in the Senate would be dramatically reduced.
