It’s the only time West Virginia voted for the Republican Presidential nominee in 1932-1996 besides 49-state landslides. Stevenson won West Virginia in 1952, so it can’t just be Eisenhower’s popularity as a General.

WV tended to vote for Republicans in landslide re-election bids in that era . 1956, 1972 and 1984 are the only times Republicans won the state in  the 2nd half of the 20th century and all  of them were landslide reelection bids .

I think it's because he did a good job in his first term as president, so they just wanted to reward him, just like their big brother Kentucky did.

Also, it's not like West Virginia overwhelmingly went for Stevenson in 1952. He only carried it by a 52 to 48 percent margin. It got swept up in the 41 state Eisenhower landslide.
