It’s the only time West Virginia voted for the Republican Presidential nominee in 1932-1996 besides 49-state landslides. Stevenson won West Virginia in 1952, so it can’t just be Eisenhower’s popularity as a General.

I think it's because he did a good job in his first term as president, so they just wanted to reward him, just like their big brother Kentucky did.
