Did anyone vote for Obama or stay home because they weren't willing to vote for a Mormon?

No, the number of voters who would have otherwise voted for a Republican but refused to vote for Romney because of his religion was almost definitely too small to have any real impact on the election.

Probably with some, but not enough to be statistically significant.

I can't see too many people who would be uncomfortable voting for a Mormon being comfortable voting for a black man.

Most would have the attitude of ' better a Mormon than a black guy'.

Imagine telling someone in the heart of rural Georgia back the 1950s, that someday, they would cast a vote for a Yankee Mormon Republican--and that they would have to, to stop a black guy!

Atlas Democrats surely loved to play that card back in 2012.

Or that they'd be voting for a Republican billionaire from New York four years later. Man, times have changed

There were swings in the Bible Belt toward Obama in 2012, Mississippi and Louisiana swung to the left in 2012.

There were swings in the Bible Belt toward Obama in 2012, Mississippi and Louisiana swung to the left in 2012.

This came entirely from black voters, who would never have voted for a Republican regardless of their religion.

Deep South whites certainly didn't swing towards Obama in 2012.

Where were those black voters in 2008?

I assume that black turnout was actually higher in those states in 2012, because if you look at exit polls, Obama did worse with whites in them compared to 2008.

Maybe a little bit.  Maybe a few people voted for Obama for that reason but I doubt it swung any counties, let alone states.

No way it mattered in a statistically significant manner, no.

Maybe enough to where Romney would have gotten 48 percent, but not much more

On second thought, why the hell would I want to be in rural Georgia in the 50s?

1. Most Americans did not know he was a Mormon

2. Most Americans do not know much about Mormonism outside of Utah. If they do, all they know is that they used to allow multiple wives. Romney clearly had one wife so it didn't matter

3. No one cares. Its 2012, most white Americans are just lumped together. No one cares if you are Irish or German or Baptist or Catholic. The amount of people who do are too small to affect an election.

Romney lost because Obama was a popular incumbent who had a strong coalition. The economy was improving and Obama was very strong in the Midwest for saving the auto industry. Plus Republicans were still blamed for the recession. The idea that Romney lost because of his faith is just silly
