Thanks, RI.  Really neat stuff.

Elmer and Gertrude are the oldest male and female names, respectively, according to a 538 article, so I'm surprised their maps look so different.  Heck, I'm surprised they're so prevalent in those maps at all, as >90% of people who've been given those names since 1900 are now dead.

The Udall distribution out West is expected.  Delaware County, NY stands out in the Smirnoff map as there doesn't seem to be a prevalent Russian culture there, but maybe that surname isn't the best proxy for Russian-Americans.  Cohen is Jews and the distribution there is about what I expected.

Bergen is a Norwegian name although it is more common in the Northeast than in Minnesota and the Dakotas, though I think I know why.  Nosal is Polish and seems to be a good proxy for the Polish-American population.

Should be denoted that the only states with real Rockefeller’s are New York, West Virginia, and Arkansas, as far as I can ascertain.

What is the data set where this data comes from? Do you have access to some gigantic voter file?

Yes, I recently got access to a national voter file.

This is super cool. Is this through one of your academic projects or did you obtain it through other means?

Anyway, I want to see a map for the name Peniston for obvious reasons.

I would assume it's most common in areas with lots of very old ethnic Germans, like rural Wisconsin.
