WESTEROS BATTLE TOURNAMENT FACTIONS

You get your general's unit, plus 10 others. What make up these 10 units is entirely up to you. You can only recruit one of the special units (although you don't have to use it if you don't want to).

THE NORTH:

Generals: Ned Stark (cautious), Robb Stark (aggresive)

Each army has one general, who comes with a cavalry unit of 50 of his chosen knights, all have a score of 12.

Units - score - (number of men)

Infantry – 9 (180)

Pikemen – 9 (180)

Archers – 6 (180)

Cavalry – 6 (90)

Special unit - Wildlings (350) - A large unit of brave warriors, but they lack discipline, armour and the weapons of their southern cousins. Used wisely they can cause fear, panic and no little damage in the enemy ranks, used unwisely and they can be a liability.

The North has a reputation for producing tough and reliable men, loyal to the Starks. As such, that loyalty is hard to break on the battlefield. The Northern army has great morale and won't rout when the going gets tough. Although it has a large population, troops are notoriously difficult to mobilise and this affects the number of men the Starks can put in the field. Whilst their soldiers are as hard as they come, the North's unwillingness to embrace chivalry means their archers and cavalry are weaker than other kingdoms.

THE RIVERLANDS

Generals: Brynden Tully (cautious), Edmure Tully (aggresive)

Infantry – 7 (190)

Pikemen – 8 (190)

Archers – 8 (190)

Cavalry – 7 (100)

Special unit - Brotherhood without Banners (200) - A guerilla unit, whose speciality is the surprise attack. The enemy won't be able to see them when the armies are deployed, no matter where they're placed in the field. Whislt their lightening attacks can be devastating, they're not cut out for the grinding down nature of pitched battles.

The Riverlands' army is a well-rounded one, with no glaring strengths or weaknesses. Decent numbers, decent morale and solid, if unspectacular troops across all unit types.

THE WESTERLANDS

Generals: Tywin Lannister (cautious), Jamie Lannister (aggressive).

Infantry – 8 (200)

Pikemen – 8 (200)

Archers – 7 (200)

Cavalry – 8 (100)

Special Unit - The Brave Companions - 10 - (200) - The Lannisters have the cash to hire 200 men from this sellsword company. As an infantry unit, their skill and experience is unmatched by the run-of-the-mill Westerosi infantry. However, they have no loyalty and care only about their reputation and getting paid. If the battle's going your way, that's fine. These cut-throats will turn-tail and run as soon as the tide turns against you though.

The Westerlands can put a large army in the field. The Lannisters can afford good armour and weapons and as such their troops are of a pretty high standard, gaining an extra point for their infantry. Their main weakness is the loyalty of the men. The Lannisters have a vicious streak and with lunatics like Gregor Clegane and Vargo Hoat involved, it doesn't inspire the same loyalty and troop morale as kingdoms like the North enjoy.

THE VALE

Generals: Jon Arryn (cautious), Yohn Royce (aggressive)

Infantry – 7 (180)

Pikemen – 7 (180)

Archers – 7 (180)

Cavalry – 10 (100)

Special unit - Hill Tribes (350) - Similar the the Wildlings, the hill tribes are brave and ferocious fighters but lack the discipline and and weaponry/armour of traditional Westerosi infantry.

The strength of The Vale lies in their knights. Their cavalry units are unparralleled in all Westeros, except for the knights of The Reach and the Kingsguard. They don't have the largest army but their troops are fiercely patriotic and proud to serve the Arryns.

THE IRON THRONE

Generals: Barristan Selmy (cautious), Rhaegar Targaryen (aggressive)

Infantry – 7 (200)

Pikemen – 7 (200)

Archers – 7 (200)

Cavalry – 8 (100)

Special Unit - The Iron Throne gets a choice, you are the King after all. Either

The Gold Cloaks - (350) - The city watch can be kitted out with spears and used as a large spearmen unit. With little battle experience, they're not individually as good as most other spear units but they're large number does give an advantage. Don't expect them to fight to the bitter end though.

The Kingsguard - 13 - (50) - The legendary knights of the Kingsguard can gather together a small cavalry unit and join the battle. They're few in numbers but there are no better knights in all the world. These men would rather die than surrender.

The Iron Throne has the clout to field a decent sized army despite not being in sole control of too much land. Some of their army contains the sweepings of Flea Bottom though so their infantry/pikemen lose a point. The people of King's Landing have an uneasy relationship with the IT so they're not the most commited troops but the resources of the IT means they have some choice about special units, depending on who they fight and what their strategy is.

THE STORMLANDS

Generals: Stannis Baratheon (cautious), Robert Baratheon (aggressive)

Infantry – 7 (200)

Pikemen – 8 (200)

Archers – 8 (200)

Cavalry – 7 (100)

Special Unit - The Kingswood Brotherhood (200) - Similar to the BwB. a guerilla unit, whose strength lies in surprise attacks, and their depolyment remains a secret from the enemy until the battle starts.

The Stormlands are a bit of a jack-of-all-trades force. No major strengths and no major weaknesses.

DORNE

Generals: Doran Martell (cautious), Oberyn Martell (aggressive)

Infantry – 6 (190)

Spearmen – 10 (190)

Archers – 8 (190)

Cavalry – 7 (100)

Special Unit - The golden company (200) - A specialist sellsword infantry unit. Like the BCs, superior in skill, experiecne, weaponry and armour to normal Westerosi infantry but, like all sellswords, a bit fickle and won't continue fighting if they think they'll be wiped out or the battle is lost.

The Dornish are famed for the spearmanship and have the best spear units in Westeros, they're deadly and highly mobile. They don't have the largest army and their normal infantry are not as good as most other kingdoms.

THE REACH

Generals: Mace Tyrell (catious), Loras Tyrell (aggressive)

Infantry – 7 (210)

Pikemen – 6 (210)

Archers – 7 (210)

Cavalry – 10 (110)

Special Unit - The Second Sons (200) - Like the Lannisters, the Tyrells are loaded and can hire this sellsword comapny if they choose. Like all sellsword comanpies, they are extremely good at what they do but extremely disloyal.

The power of the Tyrells is two-fold: their wealth and their knights. They can afford to put more bodies on the field than any other house and their cavalry and knights are joint best in the land, with the Vale. Money can buy you many things but it can't buy you love. The men of The Reach aren't known particulalry for having the stomach for a dirty fight. If they face a choice between fighting to the bitter end for their lord or escpaing to live another day, many will flee.

Each battle will have a unique situation to fight in, though all will have even placement for forces and a diagram showing the field. Mayhaps an open field, mayhaps a forest or river to one side, maybe some existing fortification to take... Each battle will need two guest judges, and myself presiding over them for more unbiased opinions. Almost all victories I've judged were unanimous.

There are others of course, but I think that's the fat of the lamb of what we'd be working with. Most of the players should be Kingslanders using intrigue and such until the game moves into a middle phase, which would be the war itself.
