The 1978 MS senate election was the first time a republican won a senate election in the state popularly. Thad Cochran won a plurality with the democrats being split between Maurice Dantin and Independent Charles Evers.

How would it have turned out if Evers did not run?

Also what if Evers won the democratic nomination?

The support Evers received judging by the county map was largely black, and considering that even segregationists like Stennis (1982) and Talmadge (1980) handily won rural black areas, Ever’s support would of almost certainly gone to the Democratic candidate overwhelmingly. So Cochran likely would have lost had Evers not entered the race IMO.

It would have been fairly close, but most likely a win for the dixiecrat.

Maurice Dantin was not a member of the States' Rights Democratic Party and I can find no evidence of him opposing civil rights. To the contrary, he came out in support of the equal rights amendment ratification and the Voting Rights Act during his campaign.

Never mind. It was a wild guess.
