Nuremberg mayor defends 'Christ Child' teen after far-right racism

Quote
The mayor has slammed "idiotic comments" targeting the teen picked to play the "Christ Child" at the city's famous Christmas market. In a post on Facebook, the far-right AfD had suggested Germans were being eradicated.

Nuremberg Mayor Ulrich Maly has voiced support for the 17-year-old girl chosen to portray the "Christ Child" during this year's Christmas festivities, after she was targeted by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

"You would laugh about it if you didn't know these guys are serious, but you could cry about this level of misanthropy," Maly said at a press conference on Sunday.

The mayor noted that the city's "Christ Child" choice has sparked "idiotic comments" in the past, including "ethnically-connotated remarks."

"But today we have an openly racist connotation," he said.

Maly's comments came after a local AfD branch criticized the selection of Benigna Munsi for the role. The Nuremberg-born teen's father is of Indian descent, though has been German for many years, and her mother is also German.

"Nuremberg has a new Christ Child. One day, we're going to go the way of the Indians," read a comment posted to Facebook — suggesting Germans were being eradicated or subjugated in the same way as indigenous groups in North America.

I actually believe the AfD when they say that this hadn't been approved by their board. Then again, most political parties' social media posts aren't and the problem is in fact that the AfD is commissioning people to run their social media accounts who apparently see no problem with comments like that, leading to the not-too-far-fetched conclusion that such thinking must be relatively commonplace within the AfD's ranks or that at the very least the AfD is obviously attracting such people.

I've also wondered whether the apparent anti-miscegenation message of his post (since Benigna Munsi is the daughter of an Indian immigrant and an ethnic German) was "accidental" on the perpetrator's part, with him originally assuming that she must have been the daughter of Muslim asylum seekers from Africa who are robbing money from poverty-stricken German pensioners' by leeching on the German welfare system or some similar nonsense. It's matter of debate what's worse or whether there's even any difference between the two: being outright racist by worrying about the racial purity of the German people or assuming that every brown person automatically fulfills some racist cliché.

"Assuming" is maybe the wrong term. In the comment section of Germany's most popular far-right 'news portal', people are already claiming that the girl cannot(!) be of Indian descent since Munsi is a Persian (and therefore a Muslim) name. The only logical explanation they have is that the evil Merkel government had decided to humiliate the good citizens of Nuremberg by selecting a Muslim girl (maybe even the daughter of a radical Islamist?) for the role of the Christkind...

I really wouldn't be surprised if the person who posted the original "One day..." comment engages in similar conspiracy theories.

Ah right, because Jesus was a blonde, blue-eyed native German Roll Eyes

These thugs should be ashamed of themselves to target this girl.

Don't underestimate their stupidity. Quite a few of these nazis think exactly this (including the "native German" part). Wink

They would go crazy at the thought that the historical Jesus probably looked like one of the Syrian refugees they despise.

Some Nazis believed something like that. For example the infamous Jürgen Stroop was convinced, according his Polish cellmate (the cellmate, Kazimierz Moczarski, would later write Conversations with an Executioner, a recommended read) that Jesus was a son of a Roman soldier of pure Germanic stock. You know, a mere Jew* wouldn't come up with the whole Christianity stuff.

* Best part, under this scenario Jesus would still be a Jew because of his mothers' origin

The bizarre thing about this casting isn't the race, but rather that a teenage girl is portraying baby Jesus. That's so f[inks]ing weird it makes concern about race seem pretty hilarious...but still why? Am I missing something about this thing?

The Christkind is a symbolic rather than a personal representation and strongly influenced by local traditions. In Nuremberg, it was played by a professional actress until 1968 and there are still a lot of restrictions in terms of age, height etc.

It's mainly an aesthetic question and I strongly suppose that young women were regarded as most suitable to provide the angel-like appearance that is associated with the role.

Christkind has always been associated with a young, blonde girl.

That’s probably also where the AfDs concerns are coming from.

But Christkind is in fact a gender-neutral, mythical fantasy version of your Santa Claus.

Maybe she's Zoroastrian and her dad can play one of the Magi!

Common mistake by foreigners. Santa Claus is, in fact, real.

Well I guess Fairuza Balk is secretly a Muslim. The proof is right in front of you, people.
