The Glouchester Times 10 January 1965 Former senator  Benjamin A. Smith II who stepped down in favor of Ted Kennedy 4 years earlier announces a run for the senate seat that is currently hold by Leverett Saltonstall  


Fellow Democrats, fellow Massachusiteans:

 
With gratitude and with determination I am running for Senate, and I am proud to run on the progressive and a liberal platform in the tradition of JFK, LBJ and my friend Ted Kennedy
 

I will mount a campaign that defines the real issues, a campaign that responds to the intelligence of the American people, a campaign that talks sense. And we're going to beat Leverett Saltonstal in '66.

 

We'll win because our country and especialy after the 1964 election where extremists like Goldwater took over the GOP we will win for the people and we will not only lead Massachusetts but the US to the great society

Peabody released a statement that Smith is nothing more but a third Kennedy ''Don't you think that Benny is a third Kennedy''
