Can someone remind me what happened to another former New York City Mayor who tried a similar strategy?

Republican turned Democrat John Lindsay did poorly in later primaries after not being on the NH ballot.

Lindsay, Giuliani, DeBlasio, Bloomberg ..

We need a total and complete shutdown of NYC mayors running for President until we can figure out what's going on.

Strong endorsements of Bloomberg from Rahm Emanuel at Politico, and Bret Stephens at the NYT.

Both make me feel like they're pitching the same arguments Republicans used (and still use) to justify their support for Donald Trump, only with the Republican scratched out and "Democrat" scribbled in in its place. I think Stephens sums it up best, when he says,

The Democratic base will not sit out the election and squander its chances to oust Trump just because Bloomberg’s wealth offends them or because they won’t vote for a candidate who doesn’t embrace the Green New Deal.

I will be proud to reject both old white Republican New York billionaires on any ballot.

that Rahm piece can just as easily if not more so be read as an endorsement of Biden.

Bloomberg's version of Biden's 2007 "articulate and bright and clean":

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/473485-bloomberg-apologizes-after-he-calls-booker-well-spoken-i-probably-shouldnt

Quote
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg apologized Friday after calling fellow 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) “well spoken," a phrase which critics have said has racist undertones.

While discussing his 2020 competitors with CBS’s Gayle King in an interview that aired Friday morning, Bloomberg said, “Cory Booker endorsed me a number of times, and I endorsed Cory Booker a number of times. He’s very well spoken, he’s got some good ideas.”

Obama said it was no big deal.   Booker got offended.  That's why Obama was President and Booker won't be.

Like many of the leaks intended to discredit Bloomberg, it's easy to see this coming across as "tells it like it is" to someone primed by half a dozen of his ads.

I think one could characterize some things Bloomberg has said recently as constituting just as much if not more of an apology tour as Biden.  Spot on remark about Beto though.

Are there any countries with single-payer systems where a 95-yr old would be likely to receive aggressive cancer treatments?
