In 9 counties in Kansas and 3 counties in South Dakota, McCain did better than Kerry. What caused these counties to swing towards McCain?

Most of the parts of Kansas he outperformed Kerry in had been trending GOP for a while. Wheat-growing German country including some places Dems used to do well in like Ellis County. Since 1992, where Clinton somehow prevailed, GOP win margins Presidentially continued to increase there.
