Big development.

Álvaro García Linera, who's been Evo's VP from the start, is now the president.

Apparently it's kind of a coup- all the Ministers  resignedone by one, Morales left a letter of resignation in the President's palace and escaped. His plane was seen above rural areas, reportedly he's escaping to Argentina. This is according to Israeli journalist Nadav Eyal.

So we basically have two great Latin American traditions coming together: leaders overstating their welcome and coups.

I wish the CIA could take credit for this.  Hope you’re right!  They haven’t been so helpful in Venezuela.

I must admit I'm no expect on Bolivia, but there seem two be two aspects.

1: Morales have been a competent leader under those rule the GDP have tripled.

2: He also have illegal run for a fourth term.

Pretty sad that he didn't retire instead of overstaying his welcome, it would have good for him, good for his legacy and great for Bolivia.

I was not a fan of Morales going for another term, but this is horrid news. I have a bad feeling that Bolivia isnt going to go through this unscathed.

...ok, yeah, this is a coup.

It was awful of Morales to try to rig the election (if he did - at this point we have to wonder), but that certainly doesn't authorize the right to unilaterally seize power.

Hope Bolivia gets through this, and that the progress made towards indigenous rights remains intact.

So we have the office vacant, since the entire line of succession (VP, Presidents of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies) resigned as well.

WTF is going on?

Supposedly the second VP of the Senate intends to assume the Presidency - Congress must accept the resignations first -, but there's also the virtually unknown President of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice. I suppose the governing MAS could also elect new Presidents for the Senate or the Chamber of Deputies so they're elevated to the presidency, but the power vacuum seems very real.

Reports indicate Morales tried to flee Bolivia in the presidential plane but was denied asylum or use of airspace by neighboring countries (Mexico has offered polical asylum), his current whereabouts have been a matter for speculation in the last few hours.

Apparently the head of the national police issued arrest orders for Morales, and opposition leader Camacho said a few minutes ago the military has the presidential plane and the army/police is going after Morales in the Chapare Province (in the Cochabamba area, Morales's bastion) to arrest him.

On the right side of history with Pinochet, on the right side of history tonight.

I certainly can understand the temptation of wanting a fourth term!

Yes we get it, you think that military coups (very possibly followed by ethnic genocide) are cool.

Bolsonaro and Pinochet admirer too, I presume?
