Rich businessman stereotype. What’s really surprising is that this didn’t apply to Trump as well.
It may have, if Bernie had been the Democratic nominee.

Bernie would do better than Hillary for that reason.

His father was quite pro-civil rights which alienated a lot of #racisthicks.

Doubt it. Romney is a stronger candidate than McCain, he would not have picked Palin as his running mate

When will this myth die? Have you not learned anything from 2016? The Palin pick was great from McCain, it gave his struggling campaign a huge boost out of the convention and he was leading Obama in the polls until Lehman Brothers happened.

Palin was a 100x smarter pick than the Romney pick of Ryan in 2012, which got the GOP ticket eviscerated by being tied to the Ryan's Medicare vouchers for seniors plan.

That was a standard convention boost. Palin proved to be a blatering idiot who alienated moderates and cost McCain dearly. Studies show that she cost McCain several million votes. He probably would have won IN, NC, FL, NE02 if it weren't for Palin.

I'd assume she helped him with culturally conservative whites, but hurt him with college-educated voters. Polling showed she helped him in states like North Dakota, at the very least.

^ Lurking variables are hard to perceive.  Our perception of who votes for whom is so pathetically fluid.  Plenty of “college educated voters” liked Palin just fine ... before the party switch of 2016/2018, after all!!

Romney could not connect with blue collar, middle class to lower middle class workers.

Yeah, of course. I didn't say she repelled every college educated voter.

This might have moved dozens of votes.

Anyway, I wouldn't say Romney was really hated but he was also not a candidate many people were rushing to vote for. He seemingly made no attempt at all to connect with blue collar voters, reminded them of a kind of corporate smug ruthless boss who puts a nice face on things, and sold himself as the country club candidate. Now, even that will still get you into the mid 40s in most midwestern states as long as you have some amount of generic Republican cultural conservatism to you. But it's not going to win you elections if you are up against a charismatic candidate like Obama was. He seemed to speak fluent corporate HR.

(nationally) CNN exit polls-

Quote
Who Is More In Touch With People Like You?

Obama - 53%

Romney - 43%

This sums it up pretty well
