Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates overtook Amazon.com Inc.’s Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest person on Friday, reclaiming the top ranking for the first time in more than two years.

Microsoft has surged 48% this year, boosting the value of Gates’s 1% stake. The rest of his wealth is derived from share sales and investments made over the years by his family office, Cascade.

Nice. Bill Gates is a massive FF and who has been very successful in business and donated a ton of money for good causes. Same with his wife. I think he would even be a fair president.

This is not exactly accurate of what Bill Gates truly does. He spends some of his own money to address problems he sees fit in the manner he sees fit and then tries to leverage those "successes" to get governments to spend way more money.

Some of his initiatives have been a spectacular failure such as his involvement in education and teacher evaluations and it cost the public a lot of money. Another initiative he has is to build an updated and modern nuclear reactor, something that is widely unpopular with the public and widely expensive in upfront costs to the taxpayers. Without getting into the merits or the hassles and solutions his proposed "modernized nuclear power plant" would have, it's clearly a case of Gates using some of his money to leverage public money. That is not exactly charity, it's something else altogether.

I believe in democratic solutions to problems, not Bill Gates deciding how to remake the world in his own image, especially when his track record isn't the greatest. Bill Gates wealth should be taxed at a greater rate, the massive wealth inequality is nothing to celebrate.

Mental image of a very distressed Bill Gates frantically throwing money out of an enormous pool as it fills with more money faster than he can get rid of it like a very dark version of Scrooge McDuck.
