Watching the public hearings this weeks has made me notice a disparity in how people pronounce it. Which do you think is proper way?

I had my suspicions about this, but a quick glance at Wikipedia confirms it. The use of "Kiev"--which I adopted, albeit sans any particular political intention--comes from the Russian spelling/pronunciation "Киев". In Ukrainian, it's "Київ", which, per Wikipedia, produces the "Keev" pronunciation.

I wonder if the disparity in pronunciation is reflective of any underlying political biases (like "Ukraine" versus "the Ukraine"), but I imagine more often than not it's simply a matter of what one was taught.

Note that in Ukrainian, the letter v actually sounds like the English /w/ sound. Thus, the Ukrainian pronunciation is actually something along the lines of KIH-yeeoo.

Hm. Must be our source for “nuclear wessels” and “wodka”. Chekhov was Ukrainian!

Ambassador Taylor pronounced it "Kave"

Ambassador Yovanovitch pronounced it "Keev"

Chernobyl pronounced it "Key-ev" which is how I always read it.

I don't know what to believe.

Kyev, with a /j/ rather than an /i/.

In hindsight I probably should have added an "other" option, but these are the two pronunciations I've heard the most frequently.
