Rather than essentially a hand-slap, I see two other possibilities:
(1) Acquittal, or
(2) Prison, which would likely result in Turner being severely beaten in prison.
Choose your alternative scenario. Would his name be such a cause celebre among the Left? Would the band "Good English" still get gigs?
I say yes to both, mainly because the general public (prisoner's loved ones excepted) pay little attention to the treatment prisoners endure while behind bars, figuring "they deserve it".
