I know it was a big issue in 1990-1996, but I’m not sure when it started and stopped being a big issue.

When it became commonplace because muh diversity!

In 2024, I fully expect a republican to come out in favor of repealing it and the debate will be re-opened.

 White women are the biggest benefactors of affirmative action. I think with women ascending in the work place and in politics it became a silly thing to complain about. Also as Asian Americans have made great gains in education you've seen white parents now reverse course and argue for affirmative action for their kids in elite public school institutions, especially higher education state University systems.

Plus the hilariously dishonest insistence that Asians aren't "of colours" in this one and only instance since it ruins the privilege argument.
