Roxy Music

Love is the Drug (1975)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE49NdNnBxA

(Bass Player: John Gustafson)

One of Roxy Music's first hits, this primarily relies on the tight bass work of a young bass player, John Gustafson, with his 1975 Precision bass.

William De Vaughn

Be Thankful For What You Got (1974)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDTXljIqxRE

(Bass Player: Rusty Jackman)

Title track from their 1974 release of the same name, this album sold 2 million copies. Originally scripted in 1972 as "A Cadillac Don't Come Easy", this soulful tune is reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield.

Also sampled by Ice Cube and NWA.

Kool & The Gang

Fresh (1984)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ1XwGDcA4

(Bass Player: "Kool" - Robert Bell)

A really tight groove that enhances both kick drum and snare.

The band that re-wrote the formula for bass groove in the 1970's, Kool & The Gang released 25 albums between 1970 and 2016. There were so many songs to pick from:

  • Get Down On It
  • Cherish
  • Celebration

This isn't technically a bass line, but I love the trumpets in this song.  The problem is that the song is over nine minutes long....so unless your DJ passes out at the microphone, you'll never hear it on the radio, LOL.  "If you're gonna have a hit, you gotta make it fit" -- Billy Joel

BTW, if that sounds familiar, it should....parts of it were sampled for Pitbull's 2009 hit "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)".

That's a good one.  I hear that the character of "Calhoun Tubbs" (on "In Living Color") was partially inspired by Womack.

If we're talking funky stuff from the 80s, I like this one hit wonder from 1987.

Both excellent examples. Love the Chicago one.

Also sampled by The Bucketheads as well for "The Bomb".

Gwen Guthrie

Seventh Heaven (1985)

https://youtu.be/UMpACxYoPEM

(Bass Player: Robbie Shakespeare)

Remixed by Larry Levan, the bass line is such a central part of this tune, and it really gets a hook into you.

Tame Impala

Mind Mischief

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgK_Er7WZVg

(Bass Player: Kevin Parker)

Kevin Parker writes, records, and plays every instrument. Tame Impala is simply the physical manifestation on stage of his recordings with his 4 mates from Perth who play his music live.

One band where I am content with his selfishness.

AC-DC

Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuureXcbddY

(Bass Player - Cliff Williams)

One of the first bass riffs I learnt when I started bass, the drummer and bass player in the band are like one person. Such a tight backing line up.

Skee-Lo

I Wish (1995)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryDOy3AosBw

(Bass Player - Marcus Miller)

Originally sampled from Bernard Wright's Spinnin' who had Marcus Miller, previously featured above laying down a great bass line which makes the song.

Fat Larry's Band

Act Like You Know (1982)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V46NFCtaJI

(Bass Player - Larry La Bes - surpringly not that fat)

Easily the grooviest band you have never heard of. Look at that bass player. If you were droppin' that in the mix, you would be seriously dancing along with the beat. Also features a really tasty guitar solo for all of you electric guitarists out there.

Remarkably, they had what I would consider a No 1 hit in:

Zoom (1982)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMo6Ju8SJ8o

which never really charted either. Maybe naming themselves "Fat" Larry's Band had something to do with it, but nonetheless, great musicality from this group of musicians.

That was such a nice song with a great feeling. Good one to send to the missus when she is lonely and missin' you.

The guitars in this song sound cool, IMHO.  Also, the lead singer is Ronnie James Dio!!

That is when Ritchie split from Deep Purple. Some great songs on that album.
