Greedo.

Odd that Disney included George Lucas' latest and previously unreleased update of the "Han shot first" scene this month on Disney Plus with Greedo now calling Han Solo a racial slur in Rodian ("maklunkee") right before Han kills him.

Stil my favourite, despite the xenophobia.

Probably the Emperor. Second place goes to Obi-Wan, honorary mention to Grand Moff Tarkin.

Definitely Palpatine. But I don't appreciate that they brought him back out of desperation in Episode IX. I love the character, but I wish they had just moved on and not done a disservice to Anakin's character arc by retconning his sacrifice.

Oh boy, this is hard. So many great choices, all for different reasons.

Anakin has the most compelling emotional arc, obviously. So much so that his arc is what drives the entire narrative arc of the Star Wars movies (the real ones, I mean, not the Disney sh*t). You can quibble about the execution of some bits here and there, but just like an impressionistic painting, what looks like big random spots of paint up close becomes a breathtakingly beautiful picture when seen from afar. Every major beat works exactly as it should to tell the story of a tormented soul falling to the darkness before being rescued from it.

Obi Wan is an absolute delight, always played by charismatic actors who give him a real personality regardless of his changing position in the plot. Indeed, after Anakin, he's the character who changes most over the course of the series - from the young Padawan who looks up to his master and is duty bound to take up his responsibilities after hus death, to the war veteran and mentor figure trying to do right by both Anakin and the Republic, to the jaded, broken hermit who desperately clings to one last bit of hope. It's another fascinating life trajectory, and there would be a lot to say about it.

Palpatine is a wonderfully despicable, perfectly campy villain whose enjoyment is impossible to resist. I'd rate McDiarmid's performance as the best in the entire series, honestly. He understands his role perfectly and isn't afraid to go all in with it (from what I understand, he even resisted Lucas' efforts to rein him in, and I think the movies are all the better for it).

Padmé is... well, I'll be real here, it's hard to be fully objective when she's one of if not my earliest movie crush. Still, even aside from all that, she's a badass, probably the closest thing to a genuinely good character in the prequel trilogy (she makes the one mistake of calling for a NCV on Valorum, but come on, she was 14 and her planet under military occupation - no one can blame her). Her conflict between her love for Anakin and her love for democracy is also rendered brilliantly. And in the climax of RotS, she displays more bravery than any other character. I wish she'd had an even more prominent role (and especially that her death hadn't been handled so awkwardly), but what we got is still great.

The original trilogy cast needs no introduction, of course. Luke is fairly bland in ANH, honestly, but his arc in ESB and RotJ is the best thing about both movies, and serves as the perfect rejoinder to Anakin's arc in the prequels. Han and Leia both have their great badass moments and are a constant source of wonderful banter. A sequel trilogy exploring their lives after the fall of the Empire could have worked, if they hadn't been just exploited for nostalgia's sake, but alas.

There are plenty of other characters to explore. I do have a soft spot for Qui Gon myself. He's a very complex figure who seems to have both some of the most lucid takes on the Jedi yet also contributes to their eventual doom by his actions. I wish we'd seen more of him. His interactions with Jar Jar are also legitimately funny, and almost make the latter character work for me (sadly, the rest of Jar Jar humor is pretty bad). And speaking of comic relief, R2 and especially 3PO are always a joy as well.

I don't even dislike the characters of the Disney movies. They are actually great on paper (Finn especially, who had the potential to add a whole new layer of worldbuilding with his backstory). But sadly, these movies are entirely devoid of real character moments, so we'll never see their potential realized.

I don't think I can really pick a favorite, but that's what ultimately makes Star Wars Star Wars - a vast and expensive cast of complex yet powerfully archetypal characters.

He's Chewbacca's dad from 'The Star Wars Holiday Special.' He masturbates to a virtual reality simulation in it.

I wish I could forget it! I wish I could forget ever watching that special out of the morbid curiosity! It's canon too, which is just awful. That Jefferson Starship song was bad-ass though! I actually listen to it from time to time. And it also means that they are canon to the 'Star Wars' universe.

General Grievous, Shaak Ti, Starkiller/Galen Marek, and Emperor Palpatine. All of them were great in Legends and before TCW. I much prefer pre-2008 SW to post 2008 SW. Now if we're also counting the Old Republic era, Vitiate, Nihlus, Revan, Ashara Zavros, Vette, Mako, the list can go on. SWTOR has a lot of great characters.
