2006
New York City, New York

John Edwards chuckled at the joke one of his colleagues had made. Even to those around him his laugh seemed hollow. John Edwards despised the men around him in this hotel bar. They were everything he hated. They were the elite he had spent his life railing against. He sipped his gin and tonic to try to drown out the aristocratic voices around him. He nodded along and pretended to care for what felt like an eternity before finally he was thanked for his time and left alone at the bar. His resolve was stronger now than ever, he was going to run in 2008 and beat guys like that. As he finished his drink, he settled his tab and rose from his stool. He checked his watch and began to rush towards the exit, he had a flight to catch. A blonde woman across the room caught sight of him and called out,

“Senator Edwards! Senator! Wait!”

As John Edwards slipped out the front door, Rielle Hunter’s words were lost in the crowded room. He would never see her again.
