You could say the first civil liberties advocates were the Democratic-Republicans, who advocated for universal manhood suffrage until that was achieved with Andrew Jackson. They start voting Whig and then Republican when abolitionism gets big starting around the time of the Texan War of Independence. Unsure about the Gilded Age. They definitely tried to make a place for themselves in the progressive movement, so they vote accordingly in the early 20th century. Not sure about the 1920s. From 1932 on, solid Democrat, possibly defecting to Dewey or Wallace in 1948. A big part of the New Deal Coalition and opposed to the religious right that came about after the Southern Strategy. Stevenson, I'm hesitant on. Loyal liberal following, but didn't rock the boat with civil rights. They say he had liberal support but Eisenhower pulled off huge margins in the northeast.
