I know, I know...I have Trump Derangement Syndrome.

But indulge me for a moment.

Let's say Bernie Sanders wins the election, but Trump refuses to concede and even refuses to leave office citing "voting irregularities" or whatever else.  I believe the GOP would never surrender to a socialist, even if they lose an election fair and square.  Go further and say that the Secret Service, the military, and the police back him up.

Would you still support him?

3 people have voted they would still support Trump in a potential coup.

They should identify themselves.

Because Trump is exactly the kind of president who would become a dictator given the slightest push.  And his supporters are exactly the type of people who’d accept it.  I think they should be on record as to how they’d stand.

Doesn't the fact that even informed Banana Republicans on this site would continue to support Trump even if he stages a coup tell you that this really isn't far fetched at all?

He’s been instructed by Trump himself not to believe the things he sees with his own eyes or hears with his own ears. So if Trump actually became a dictator or at least tried to be one, he’d for sure still support him.

If the Secret Service, police and military top brass are all supporting Trump then its a full-scale coup d'etat and all bets are off in terms of who/what I'm supporting.  This is the kind of scenario where Trump, Congress, governors, the military, etc. could all be simultaneously claiming authority.

If he lost the EC, of course I would not support his remaining.  Even if he lost due to Faithless Electors, he would have lost and would have to leave.  Of course, the worst outcome I see if Trump lost is Trump being a Sore Loser in the style of Stacey Abrams mold and some legal challenges, but he won't hunker down.

They should be commended for being honest, since 95% of Republicans will believe and do whatever Trump says

If he wins the EC and then faithless electors throw it to the opponent, that is the kind of situation where Trump doesn't leave and his base supports him.  I don't want to think about how that could end up.  Best case scenario, SCOTUS does a Bush v Gore, giving Trump the win, to avert massive unrest.

If Trump loses clearly by a landslide in the electoral college than no.

If Trump loses unfairly by electors defecting, I'd be open to still supporting him.

The Electoral College is how we elect Presidents.  For better or for worse.  The Founders didn't intend electors to necessarily be pledged, and were likely fine with the idea of Faithless Electors to protect America from someone whom, after election, was revealed to be a Napoleon (or a Hitler or a Stalin).  Of course that can be "abused", but this is our system.  If we wish to elect Presidents by popular vote, we need to amend our Constitution to bring this on.

What if he loses the electoral college in something much less than a landslide?  Such as, 270-268 to the Democrat.  And I'm not talking about faithless electors trying to alter the results.

He would challenge results, say things were rigged, irregularities, etc and we all know it.  If he says these things about such a narrow electoral loss to stay in power--and the police, secret service, military back him (regardless of how likely that is, he does have their support as he's told us many times)--would you still back him as well?

I'm not talking about some near impossible huge electoral college win by the Democrat.  I think in that unlikely scenario he would concede.  But a very narrow loss (or any loss hinging upon one or two states), and he'll claim fraud.

I'm asking for you to be on the record in saying you'd support or not a Trump coup in the face of a very narrow election loss.

What happens if Trump wins fair and square, but Dems together with "free" press put on tin foil hats and start to falsely claim 24/7 that Russians have stolen it. Oh, wait  Angry

Pretty small sample of Republicans here, but nonetheless the fact that they are evenly split on this question is disturbing.

As someone who still hasn’t voted in this poll and is just really bored on the train, I’d wager many of us don’t even bother going on this subforum enough and especially not with topics like this.  However, yes, it’s disturbing anyone would support a President who was voted out hunkering down.

Disturbing, but not very surprising. Authoritarianism runs deeps in the GOP.

Do you by any chance not bother going on this subforum because it is impossible to defend the conduct of your party?

Just to let you know, I will not defend you when you are tried and shot for treason.

I'll represent child molesters, wife beaters, drug dealers, and even innocent people from time to time. But I don't help traitors.

I don't know why but this made me think of a MAGA supporter looking at Trump and seeing an Aragorn figure.

Which in turn made me think of a MAGA fantasy of Trump leading the MAGA Army against a hoard of illegal Mexican invaders attempting to swarm the border via a broken open piece of The Wall.
