I just saw Prince Caspian.  Very good, though missing some of the magic of the first movie.  However, what is surprising was how little turnout there was at the theatre tonight.  My movie only had 13 people in it, and I doubt that any of the showings of Indiana Jones was sold out.  Almost looked like it was a weekday showing.

It's called the "fanboy effect". Movies like that always drop hard in the second week.

So how would you rank the Solondz movies?

I'd say:

Welcome to the Dollhouse
Storytelling
Happiness
(still haven't seen Palindromes)

I'm quite in the minority in liking Storytelling more than Happiness it seems. I think its narrative fits Solondz's style more though.

I've realized lately that the plot for Donnie Darko is hardly anything spectacular or original. What makes it so enjoyable is everything else about it, it's told in the best possible way, the 80s setting, the ambiance, the excellent performances from everyone and the chemistry between Jake and Maggie that would be impossible to replicate with a pair that wasn't real life brother and sister.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD

Ok, I loved NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN but how did it beat this epic masterpiece for Best Picture?

It's basically a consolation prize for the Coen brothers due to the Academy shafting Fargo. 10 years from now Paul Thomas Anderson might very well win Best Picture over a superior film for the same reason.

Hmmm, you must be quite mature. I'd expect that would put your average 14 year old to sleep.

He probably is doing the whole "Let's overanalyze and conclude really stupid sh!t as a result of that overanalysis" Gully Foyle thing and considering the movie to be fascist/Nazi.

Hellboy 2.

It's worth it just for the action sequences and cool creatures, but some of the cheesiness went over the top. Also the last scene and cut to credits was a total groaner (though no doubt that's exactly the type of reaction del Toro was aiming for.)

Did you see the trailer for Babylon AD? That one actually REALLY pissed me off that it was PG-13 since it looked like it would be awesome if it was R. I read it had to be cut to get a PG-13 so I'll probably just wait for the "unrated" DVD which would be the real version.

A whole lot of fun. Why don't they make movies like that so much anymore?

Sleepwalking.

The reviews were bad, but I was curious for some reason. I actually did enjoy it. The pace was criticized but that seemed to be the style of the film to me, it's an indie after all. Of course the trailer was terrible, it was like a Lifetime original movie, so maybe that changed expectations. Nick Stahl and Charlize Theron did a great job, as did the girl playing the daughter.

Rented The Kingdom.  Decent film.  The last 20 seconds were powerful and worth the price of rental.

I got the impression the director thought a lot of Republicans would go to the movie misinformed thinking it'd be some rah-rah jingoistic film and through that in at the end to give them a real suckerpunch.

Syriana.

To be honest, it was just TOO cliched. It went out of its way to make the prince standing up to US interests to be the most liberal admirable guy possible when in fact such people in Middle East are unlikely to be like that (and in this case as well, the extent of the guy's "anti-Americanism" was that he gave a contract from a US company to the Chinese when they bid higher.) Which brings to the second point, that even the CIA wouldn't go so insane about something like THAT. The whole domestic story with the oil companies was a bit more realistic, especially with the whole "let's throw a few people to the dogs and let them take the blame while everyone else gets off scot-free as a result.", though it was nowhere near as interesting.

Also even the CIA would never do what they did in that movie. They'd at least TRY to be subtle and give something that would have an iota of deniability to it.

I much preferred Traffic.

Pineapple Express.

Funny, but one of those movies you can't fully enjoy in a theater, rather you have to enjoy it at home on the couch stoned out of your mind.

Was there a big turnout for it? Were they really into it?

Yes on both.

It's actually not that funny. Print media doesn't always translate into video well.
