There Will Be Blood

pretty phenomenal.  just a good story, expertly adapted and directed by Anderson, beautifully shot, and anchored with a great performance by Paul Dano and one for the ages by Daniel Day-Lewis.  possibly my new #1 for 2007.

Cloverfield

is alright.  good idea that is well executed bogged down by a crummy script and so-so performances.  entertaining though.

Into The Wild.

A lot better than I expected. I only went to it because I figured it'd be a good and cheap (it was only $3) way to kill 2 1/2 hours. Incredible story and cinematography, the dialogue a little cheesy at times (especially the narration by Chris's sister), but on a whole stunning and moving.

3rd best movie of the year! maybe 2nd.

Teeth

Just plain hilarious and uncomfortable.  "It's true!! VAGINA DENTATAAAA!!!" is one of the best lines ever.  I really never will get anywhere near one of those.

hahaha imdb ratings...what a joke.  though it is certainly a great film.

The Savages  (B)

Good, great performances from Hoffman and Linney, but not really anything new or original.  Just flowed OK without really having anything to say.  I don't know why it's up for screenplay.

Gone Baby Gone (B+)

Surprisingly good.  Well shot and told.  A pretty plain crime story with twists, but yeah.  Affleck the elder is a surefooted director, and Affleck the younger is becoming one of my favorite working actors, also due to...

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (A-)

Beautiful to look at, with a good story.  Great performances by Pitt and especially Affleck.  A little long, but so well done with a beautiful score.

Shame Isaacs wasn't nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the Patriot. If he was he would have had a good shot at winning one, even though it was a certainty that Jim Broadbent would win for his role in Iris.

actually, most publications had McKellan as the odds-on favorite to win that year.  and Isaacs couldn't have won, the film had such middling reviews.

Death at a Funeral (2007)

One of the funniest films I have seen this year and probably in my lifetime. After watching the first ten minutes of the film I thought the film critics had led me on, but thankfully I was proven wrong. A film I highly reccomend for anybody.

:-(
I thought it was the worst movie of the year until I saw "Across the Universe."  It remains the 2nd worst.  To each his own!

REAR WINDOW

One of Hitchcock's best and most thrilling films. To have a film take place in one apartment and still be able to hold the interest of the viewer just shows how great of a filmmaker Hitchcock was. Great performances from both Stewart and Grace Kelly.

ooh, can we even try to rank the Hitch we've seen?  I need to compile a list.  fun activity for work!

but, already done.  I just did a top 10, because most of the others i didn't really have a good recollection of.

1   Vertigo
2   North by Northwest
3   The Man Who Knew Too Much (1955)
4   Psycho
5   Strangers on a Train
6   Rear Window
7   Shadow of a Doubt
8   Spellbound
9   Rebecca
10   Rope

actually, i thought it made the breakup as painful and cold as it could possibly be.  and the last one was just bookending.  i don't think they were for shock at all.

Wall-E.  Which was lovely, except I couldn't get into the romance, the main characters being robots.  And the second half of the film was not nearly as good as the first.  Overall, another big A/A- to Pixar, who has yet to do any wrong in my eyes (though I haven't seen Cars).

1. Ratatouille
2. The Incredibles
3. Toy Stoy 2
4. Finding Nemo
5. Wall-E
6. Toy Story
7. A Bug's Life
8. Monster's, Inc.

BATMAN FOREVER

Absolutely horrible. Thank God that Chris Nolan came in.

now, nolan's vision is much MUCH better than schumacher's.  and Batman and Robin is atrocious (but a hoot to watch).  I do not mind "forever" though.  completely different and more than often silly, but not terrible IMHO.

Romeo and Juliet (1968) - This is how the play should be portrayed on screen.  It's leagues ahead of the 90's crap.

A friend of mine showed that in her English class several years ago.  It didn't go so well, due to a certain scene in particular.  Now she shows the 1996 version Tongue

i'd like to think your friend was my 8th grade english teacher who, when the assets in question appeared on screen, yelled "NONONONONONO!!!" and rushed to the front to cover the screen.  she then profusely apologized for corrupting us the next day.

I think it was the man ass rather than the boobage though.

Slumdog Millionaire

Really good.  The direction is the high point.  Here's hoping Boyle gets more accolades as award season goes on.  All the child actors were pretty excellent as well.  Hooray!

And Milk was indeed really good.  don't remember if i posted about it.

Gran Torino

Decent direction, sloppy dialogue, and spotted with some really awful acting.  Big fat meh.
