No Country For Old Men

The tensest movie I've seen in a long time.  Damn.  There were a lot of times I just didn't want to look at the screen in anticipation.  But excellent.

Hitman.

Probably the best video game-based movie I've ever seen...which isn't really saying a lot. But it was a decent action flick, you just won't enjoy it without playing the games, in which case you'll b!tch about the lack of character development and whatnot that the games explain (which is why most critics hated it.)

Enchanted

I actually thought it was halfway decent.

Network

Very good. Quite prophetic in the way it foresaw the corporate takeover of America, specifically its media outlets, and the way that influenced news coverage. Very funny, too.

Over last weekend I saw The Mist (which has big differences from the book) and Fred Claus.

The Rutles: All You Need is Cash

Quite funny, if a bit inconsistent, and the musical numbers did go on for a bit too long. But all in all a very good pastiche. I also like the fact that George Harrison was enough of a sport to accept a cameo in this film.

No Country For Old Men

The tensest movie I've seen in a long time.  Damn.  There were a lot of times I just didn't want to look at the screen in anticipation.  But excellent.

It was some f'ed up nihilistic sh*t. But it was well done. Though I would feel a lot more comfortable seeing it again, just because I can get past some of the tension. That scene where Javier Bardem's character asks the clerk to flip a coin will stick with me for a while. I wonder how much the Coen brothers actually buy into the nihilism, though. In common with Fargo they seem to enjoy exploring the hopelessness and pathetic quality of life in small town America. It's the creation of something attractive to the viewer (or to some viewers) by exploiting the suffering of others. It seems like artists are more likely to buy into nihilism, perhaps because morality just constrains art; or perhaps that's the way it feels to artists.

Been a while since I saw one in theaters...that would be Michael Clayton last month.

Once in six months... is a long time. I've been there.

Audition

A modern classic, as they say. F***ing blew me away the first time I saw it and am glad to say that it still hasn't lost any of its chutzpah.

Was that the one Japanese movie with the fetuses? Cause that was pretty disgusting.

No that was Dumplings, and I think it was Korean or something.

No; but iirc Audition is the one about child molestation (I haven't see it though as I stress iirc.)

Last film I saw = Rescue Dawn. Brilliantly intense.

I'm 99% sure I've seen Audition (there's no way I would have heard of it if I hadn't), but I honestly don't remember any of it. I probably had my eyes closed throughout the entire thing, but the IMDb plot summary isn't even ringing a bell.

Oh, yes. Wikipedia comes to the rescue. The movie where that thing eats the vomit. Lovely film.

Chinese. And yeah, that film is quite sick... I actually should've added it to the list in that thread about disturbing movies back then. It's definitely up there.

As for Audition, "visceral"'s the world. What can I say, I'm a sucker for intense films. Besides, it's my theory that the final third only takes place in his head.

American Gangster

A new twist (black gangster) to the old story of rise and fall. Denzel had a good performance, and Crowe a weaker one, but some of that must go to the script- Crowe's character wasn't written as interestingly.

The Mist. Good movie based on a Stephen King short story.

Blood Diamond

It's disturbing as it's all based on reality.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

Not nearly as disturbing as I thought it would be. But very educational. Before I saw this movie it had never really clicked in my mind where the term "camcorder" came from. I guess I knew that it was a combination of "camera" and "recorder" in the back of my mind, but when I was a kid camcorder just meant to be a mini camera.
Cool. I guess my cell phone is a camcorder too.

That movie as a whole wasn't all that disturbing, but that video of the family being murdered is definitely one the most shocking and messed up things I've ever seen on film.

oh, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

it was good.  at least, really well acted.  the story had some shortcomings, what with how they decided to set up a lot of it, but aside from that there aren't many quibbles.  just a kind of by-the-numbers movie editted to seem more interesting than it was.  Hawke was great though.
