The Men Who Stare at Goats

The book was better.  Jon Ronson's a fantastic author.

That aside, the movie's really good.

Adventureland!  Quite enjoyed it, but it filled me with the most terrible ennui.  I'm in my forties, and I was a youth in the period depicted (late 1980s).  How sad.. I think its a sign of a good youth-movie when it makes olds feel sad rather than just bored.

I found it kind of nostalgia-inducing in an odd way even though I could barely remember the time the movie is set in. Probably because I was such a big fan of the music in it. Two classic Minnesota bands on the soundtrack, the Replacements and Husker Du!

I was younger than the characters at the time depicted, but not by much.  Basically a college freshman where they were supposed to be mostly recent grads.

I worked in an amusement park for one day, but I quit immediately when they made me clean garbage pails.

The Contender, worst piece of garbage imaginable. I end up watching it every couple years for some reason...

The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Wow, Geena Davis was REALLY hot back then. Movie was your typical 90s action film so rather fun.

American Madness (1932). Directed by Frank Capra. Written by Robert Riskin. Walter Huston, Pat O'Brien, Kay Johnson (75 min.)

http://www.moviediva.com/MD_root/reviewpages/MDAmericanMadness.htm

A populist bank President is saved from a run by his own depositors. The film directly confronts the bleak reality of depression America. It is interesting to see the contrasts between the attitudes then and the attitudes now. The attitudes now are all about taxpayer costs of bailouts. But in this film, the satisfying ending occurs when the bank is bailed out, thus saving the depositors. There is a detailed explication of how a bank run builds up and plays out, which, although we all know what it is intellectually, it is still fascinating to see it come alive. There is probably no better depiction of a depression era bank run even now on screen. For that reason alone you should see this movie.

Hard to Get

1938, with Dick Powell and Olivia DeHavilland

Wonderful film often forgotten when people talk about screwball comedies.  Charles Winninger really steals the show as DeHavilland's millionaire father.

The Box.

I thought this was a really solid movie, though like Donnie Darko more due to Kelly's direction than the story. The story isn't really about whether they push the button and goes into some weird directions, however the general creepy atmosphere throughout was so impressive it was impossible not to like. The one thing that annoyed me the most though was Cameron Diaz's fake southern accent.

The last one was:

Allo Berlin? Ici Paris!

By Julien Duvivier, I like that director.

It's a light but good love comedy based on a case of mistaken identity. The two main characters are that kind of good people you like to see and you want them to finish together, just because they are so worth it. And Josette Day, the main French actress is lovely.

Just before saw:

The Black Dahlia

Well, rather boring. Which is what happens most of the time some American directors try to make a movie on 30s/40s. They make everything perfect, the decorum, the costumes, the style, everything, but it seems just empty, you don't feel the actors are evolving in a special ambiance of an other epoch, you just have the feeling they are in a decorum. At least that's the impress i had about this one several other movies.

Plus here, the plot isn't that great, i mean there is not much stakes going on about what's happening in the story.

Well, the only stuffs to be noticed here are the presences of Hillary Swank and especially Scarlett Johanson in 40s looking...

In short a film in costumes in which you mainly notice that this is a film in costumes...

2012

It was surprisingly good imo. Sure it is rehashed ideas from every disaster movie ever made, with pretty bad acting but the plot could have easily been worse and the special affects blew my mindhole.

Apocalypto.   Wow, Mel Gibson loves the gore. I thought it was a great movie.  It had great visuals and story structure. As with most Gibson movies there are historical lapses, however, I think it was still powerful.

Well, it was the golden age for blondes with cherry-red lipstick, and Scarlett is designed for that look.

The Informant.

A great example of a movie with an almost completely downhill slope. It was awesome pretty early, but couldn't keep it up, and eventually got kind of too full of itself. Mostly due to it being a comedy, had it gone the dramatic route it would've probably been the opposite getting better. Still Matt Damon was hilarious playing a role very few could've properly pulled off, and isn't anything like anyone he has played before.

Looking for Eric. And as with most of Ken Loach's movies, some parts of the plots stunk. But as with every single one that I've seen, the end product was great anyways.

Oh, and Laura Ainsworth is 18 and delectable.

Next movie on my list: Die Anwälte

I really liked that film, even though Ken Loach seems to be a left-wing nutter.

Anyway, recent watches:

The Amazing Fox
Whip It

The former better, but both very enjoyable. Whip It actually presented a solid form of feminism that I can agree with.

I'm assuming Gustaf saw "The Fantastic Mr. Fox". Did they botch the translation to Swedish that badly? I've heard of even more oddly translated titles in foreign countries though.
