The Avengers

If you want to watch a comic movie with a meaningful story that can be interpreted on several different levels, try The Dark Knight or Watchmen. If you want to clap, laugh and genuinely have a lot of fun, this is your movie! If you're a comic fan, it is littered with geek-out moments... and if you're not, chances are you'll find plenty to enjoy in it anyway.

One note: I was very hyped up for this movie and I feel like I probably spoiled a few too many key scenes for myself by reading a bunch of reviews and some stuff on message boards. If you're gonna go, do your best to avoid spoilers beforehand!

The Avengers

The problem is that it was too long, since it didn't get too exciting until the big battle with Loki's army at the end. But that alone was payoff well worth it. Definitely a solid winner with Whedon's influence on it clear.

Did you see the regular version or the 3D version?

Finally got around to watching The White Ribbon. Good stuff. Speaking as someone who grew up in Shropshire, I did laugh (knowingly) at the key role of a Harvest Festival in both village life and the general multi-layered trauma that made up the plot.

^The White Ribbon has been on my watch list for a while now. I really do have to check it out.

Me too. Although I might give the 3D a shot at some point if I have time (of course, only because it's free for me).

The White Ribbon is really, really good. One of the best, most disturbing films I've seen from the last couple of years. Also very reminiscent of a pretty good Bergman film (or at least I thought so, no one else has so far agreed with me Tongue).

I recently re-watched Crimes and Misdemeanors. Very typical Allen. Funny but also rather sad. I'll probably soon watch the Burton-Depp movie. I have no expectations, but there's a girl who wants to take me and I don't refuse a free movie ticket. Tongue

The Avengers

I thought the battle on the S.H.I.E.L.D. carrier was pretty exciting as well. Although I didn't really get that whole plot arc-- why did Loki agree to get captured?

Psychological torment plus a feel for landscape. Yeah, I can see that.

Yes, but it's actually even more specific than that. A couple of scenes in particular. If you have the chance, check out this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nattvardsgaesterna and see if you agree with me!

Submarine

Great.

I tried to see the Avengers this weekend, but the theater nearby soldout the time I wanted to see it and I couldn't go any other time.  I'll try again this weekend.

Krzyżacy.  Excellent movie.  Made in 1960 in Poland and subtitled in English.  It gave nice account of a petty gentryman's quest to find a woman who had been kidnapped by the Teutons.  I'd just finished James Michener's Poland last week, so I was up on my Jagiellonian history, and I happened to find this DVD when I went to get a movie for my son.  What luck.  If you're interested in the medieval period and in large battle scenes, this one is very well done.

Dark Shadows. Weak Burton, but I was coaxed by others to go.

I finally saw The Avengers yesterday.  Pretty good movie.  The only problem I really have with it was how straightforward it was.  Nothing wrong with that, but there was really nothing for me to think about and really I forgot all about it until I saw this thread today.  Even so far this year, The Hunger Games left me with more of an impression.

That being said, it's definitely the best Marvel movie outside of the first Iron Man and would recommend seeing it if you haven't.

Our Idiot Brother

Great production values and cast for such a low budget film, and smartly written, it was nice that the title character wasn't borderline retarded and closer to how a realistic "idiot" would be like, but the plot (using the term loosely) was kind of disjointed and lacked much of a real narrative, it was just like a string of funny bits and dramatic bits. But that's kind of what I expected.

This is technically rewatched rather than seen, but that was 20 years ago when it was showing in the cinemas, and I only remembered the general mood and a few scenes but not really the plot, so...

Unforgiven.
