The Incredibles

Finally saw it, and while it was entertaining, um... Nietzsche much? The film was almost disgustingly Nazi.

Well, the entire film is about how the unwashed masses are dragging down the great, how the great have to be mediocre to fit in. The message isn't that horrible, in that it's encouraging children to be exceptional and unique and everything, but the problem is that, in the movie, only people born as "Supers" can be super. The villain (I forgot his name), becomes super by working hard and being intelligent, but because he's not a Super by blood, he is cursed to a fate of mediocrity.

Cloverfield
Really good, and the handheld-camcorder thing worked really well. My only criticism would be that there were plenty of questions left unanswered.

There Will be Blood

[some spoilers below, maybe]
I really hated it. Maybe someone here can persuade me, because I really wanted to love it, but I just found it so incoherent and messy. The movie sets up the story for 2 hours, then skips the middle, and abruptly jumps to an ending that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I thought Day-Lewis was very good, but even his performance couldn't make the film interesting for me. It felt like a bunch of set pieces, intended to show off early 20th-century California, stringed together. None of the characters were particularly likable, and there was never a central conflict to the story. He suddenly becomes a crazed alcoholic at the end with little explanation, and then he kills Eli again with little explanation. Also casting Paul and Eli as the same character was stupid and just confused me (and everyone else I was watching with).

Across the Universe.

Decent, I guess.

Eh... it's too commercial. Superbad does everything American Pie attempted and failed to do, and much better.

In Brouges
Very funny, and some good performances from everyone in the cast. Good dark comedy.

I wasn't aware that they made a film adaptation. That must be strange...

I saw Body of War at SXSW on Thursday. It was so, so good. Very emotional, at times disturbing and depressing, but with an uplifting ending. I can't recommend it enough.

Baby Mama.

Really good actually. Plenty of laughs and a lot of small but hilarious performances from random actors.

Get Smart.

It's basically just Steve Carrell being hilarious for 2 hours while surrounded by a crappy movie. Still, 2 hours of Steve Carrell is worth the $8.75.

Wall-E. It was awesome. I highly recommend.

Though, if you do see it, see it with a girl or your family. It's kind of weird seeing it with a bunch of guys.

Hancock.

Better than I expected, though it kind of felt disjointed and I didn't really like the second half as much. But Will Smith and Jason Bateman are awesome as usual.

I found the message in the movie pretty disgusting, and that ruined what was otherwise a decent movie for me. I think Ratatouille and Wall-E are the best Pixar films, anyway.

$15 is ridiculous.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

I enjoyed it. It's certainly better than Episodes 1 and 2, and probably no worse than 3 and 6. Doesn't compare to 4 or 5, obviously, but what are you going to do. I think the TV series is going to be solid.

No Country for Old Men

I liked it, I suppose, but I didn't think it was great or anything. I enjoyed the ride, but I didn't really get what the point of it all was. I didn't find the characters particularly deep or interesting either. The cinematography and story-telling style was very cool though.

Battle in Seattle.

Not at all historically accurate of course, but still one of the most intense movies I've seen all year.
It's opened in Minneapolis already? Does Minneapolis usually get such early releases?

The movie looks great. Can't wait to see it.

I got tickets to an advanced Milk screening next Thursday. Very excited about that.

I watched "Totally Baked: A Pot-U-Mentary" on Hulu.com this weekend because I was bored. It was pretty awful and I already knew everything they said.

Milk

Good, not great. The acting was uniformly superb though.

So, I was supposed to do work today, but then I saw that Requiem for a Dream was on Hulu and I'd never seen it but heard that it was a pretty good movie. And then I come here and read the last three posts. Weird coincidence.

But I don't think any film has ever affected me emotionally as much as that film just did. Like. I need somebody to hug me. Jesus Christ.
