Royal Tenenbaums, again.

I don't think I've ever watched it without distractions, and now I realize what a beautifully shot, perfectly performed, and more than perfectly written piece this film is.  My new #1 of 2001 (taking over Memento).

Across The Universe

Horrible, without even the courtesy of being entertainingly bad through the most part.

The Darjeeling Limited

Good, not great, certainly no "Royal Tenenbaums."  but really good.

Lions for Lambs

meh.  I liked a third of it (the Cruise/Streep third).  they other 2 parts weren't very good.

"Into the Wild"

A.  completely excellent.  the lead, Catherine Keener, and especially Hal Holbrook are amazing in their roles.

American Gangster.

Best. Film. Of. The. Year. The end.

really?  i thought it was almost completely unexceptional.

Lions for Lambs

I thought it was an alright film. I couldn't buy Tom Cruise as a Republican Senator though. Why would the people of Illinois vote for him? My mum kept on referring to me to Andrew Garfield's character in the film. She said in a sense, I'm wasted talent.

i thought he the scenes of him and meryl were the only things in that film worth anything.  the war scenes were predictable and sappy and the college scenes felt like an afterschool special.  pretty bleh overall.

Lars and the Real Girl

just a plain, simple good movie.  nothing extraordinary about it besides the performances, but it would have been ridiculous had it been treated almost any other way.

No Country For Old Men

The tensest movie I've seen in a long time.  Damn.  There were a lot of times I just didn't want to look at the screen in anticipation.  But excellent.

oh, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

it was good.  at least, really well acted.  the story had some shortcomings, what with how they decided to set up a lot of it, but aside from that there aren't many quibbles.  just a kind of by-the-numbers movie editted to seem more interesting than it was.  Hawke was great though.

How was Marissa Tomei? (you know what I mean)

you'll be satisfied.  the girl does not like to wear a shirt in this movie.  there are at least 3 topless scenes (i was more satisfied with ethan hawke though.)

Atonement

having read the book, i guess it was hard to not be underwhelmed.  because the book is amazing.  i think the performances were perfect across the board, with McAvoy standing out, and Ronan being very good as well.  Knightley really just didn't have much to do.  the problem is, the story is just so...literary.  so many of the ethical questions come about via the nature of authorship, and trying to translate this to film is not seamless.  the ending especially shows this.  some really good filmmaking, it just couldn't touch the novel.

i go to the ones i think are going to be good.  the best theater by us has a $6 student deal - ticket, popcorn, and drink.  more than reasonable, every monday.  i graduated, but i still flash the ID.

and i don't really think it's "independent" so much as .... i don't know the adjective.  the last five weeks have been:

Atonement
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
I'm Not There
No Country For Old Men
Lars and the Real Girl

ok so maybe fake snobbish.

Michael Clayton

you know, it was well-acted and all, but it really amounted to not much.  Swinton's my standout of the cast.
