Nixon's campaign promise at its heart was “look it doesn’t really matter what you think about me, I’m an average normal decent guy and if it’s not me you’re gonna have druggies and commies and protesters and gays and angry blacks running around being uppity so what’s it gonna be?”

And that worked.

Obama did basically win with the McGovern coalition, so yeah.
