3. TR
4. Wilson
5. Truman
6. Lincoln
7. Clinton
8. Jackson
9. Kennedy
10. Washington

1 Washington
2 Lincoln
3 FDR
4 Reagan
5 Teddy

If Bush left office today, he would be at 5, right behind Reagan. If he is reelected and more or less wins the war on terror (peace in the MidEast, regime change in Iran and N. Korea, significant decline in terror aattacks and rise in Arab reform), that might bump him to 4, ahead of Reagan. Then again, it might not.

The following list is in chronological order, as I don't feel like ranking their relative greatness.

Washington
J. Adams
Monroe
Jackson
Polk
Lincoln
T. Roosevelt
F. D. Roosevelt
Eisenhower
Reagan

I am glad to see that so few people here have listed Wilson in their top 10's .  He often gets ranked up there, but in my opinion he was the worst president of the 20th century.  Nixon and Clinton might have had a chance had it not been for their other troubles.  Clinton definitely, replacing Polk, and Nixon, well, if it hadn't been for Watergate, history might have ended up very differenly, so who knows what would have happened?

As I said on the 10 Worst board, to be fair and analytical at the bar of history, I will only count those before 1945.

BEST
1. Franklin Roosevelt
2. Abraham Lincoln
3. George Washington
4. Woodrow Wilson
5. Theodore Roosevelt
6. James Monroe
7. James Madison
8. Andrew Jackson
9. Thomas Jefferson
10. James K. Polk

I would add Truman, Ike, JFK, and Clinton if I were to include every president. (You can see that is kind of biased)

  1. Thomas Jefferson
  2. William Henry Harrison

Jefferson was the only good President we've ever had.   He abolished the national bank, paid off the national debt, and eleminated all internal taxes in the US.

William H. Harrison is the next best because he died two weeks into office and never had time to screw anything up.

In your alternate universe, maybe.  As far as I know, he kept Hamilton's economic structure for its stability, despite not agreeing with its philosophy.  That makes him one of the greatest presidents for me.

The greatest presidents IMO:
FDR
Wilson
Jefferson

I definitely don't have ten in mind who are on that level.  However, maybe add:
Chester Arthur (civil service reform)
Lincoln

Washington should get some credit for setting a precendent that neraly everybody else followed. When he took office, no one really knew how the government was going to work, but he was the one who figured it all out for us. He isn't the best, but he should definitly be among the Top 10.

An odd list... Why did you put Buchanan in there? It seems like he doesn't match your ideology.

That's biased in a good way. I don't know about Buchanan at #10. He let the allowed tensions that led to the Civil War to escalate.

HOOVER! Thank you, thank you! Another man who understands herbert Hoover's greatness!

1. That guy probably likes Hoover because he did absolutely nothing to expand the government in order to combat the depression, even when it ended up screwing the economy over.

2. He is a whacko Christ finatic.

So, somebody other than you does like Hoover, but just consider the two above points before you become too excited.

You are very correct in both of your assessments.  1) I like Hoover becuase he did little (unfortunately TOO much) to expand government.  2) I am a Christ fanatic.  He saved my soul from sin, gave me a home in heaven, and peace that passeth all understanding.  And can do the same for you.
