If said person is banned anyways, what's the point? After four months, they'll be off automatically.

It speeds up the process. And that there's only one more piece of legislation after this. Tongue

On one hand, I can't see a compelling reason to bother with this.

On the other hand, I can't see how it could hurt, really.

Since it's on the floor anyway, I'll probably be voting for it, however trivial it is.

While it makes perfect sense, it does have a rather medieval ring to it Tongue

At one point, a vote was taken over the phone (which later turned out to be fraud).

Absentee ballots have been accepted over AIM before, I believe.

There are other ways to vote.  Besides, someone could bypass their ban and - under currnet rules - the vote would count.

Why on earth would a vote like that be accepted?

Anyway, okay, I guess that gives us another reason to do this.

Current Federal law requires absentee ballots to be cast in a thread, so such people wouldn't be able to vote in Federal elections.  The Regions may have other provisions tho, and if someone were to be banished between a Presidential election and the census date, it could affect the census tally.

This bill has enough votes to pass. Senators now have 24 hours to change their votes.
