Whom should JFK have chosen for his VP in 1960 instead of LBJ?

I think he made the right choice in picking Johnson. In hindsight there might have been some better choices I suppose but at the time it was an excellent choice and Johnson went on to be a good President overall despite some large miscalculations.

LBJ was an excellent pick.  Powerful Senate connections and a southern background to offest northern catholic Kennedy.

Anyone else would have been fine with me since he wouldn't have won.  Smiley

Picking LBJ was the most obvious and politically smart thing that the Kennedy campaign did. Without Johnson, the south wouldn't have turned out the way it did for Kennedy.

Electorally, LBJ was the best pick for JFK.  For one of the few times in presidential elections, the VP nominee actually had some impact on the outcome of the election.

As has been mentioned, he was a good balance, a southern moderate with a northeastern liberal.

However, other good choices for Kennedy, who, if picked, would still have resulted in a Kennedy win, were Senator Henry Jackson of Washington, and Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri.  Either of these would have served admirably as Vice President, and both would have been able to step into the Presidency iteself and do a commendable job.

I agree with those who say LBJ was the best pick, politically.  I would argue that, in the last have of the 20th Century, this was possibly the best political choice of a VP.

LBJ carried Texas (which almost went to Nixon anyway) and boosted Kennedy in the rest of the South. Why was he a bad choice?

Johnson was a strategic pick, and Kennedy was considering (well I should say preparing) to dump Johnson for the 1964 election. I think he must've been considering either Jackson or HHH.... Possibly even Symington.

He should't have run. We'd be much better off if nixon had won in 1960.

Without LBJ he wouldn't have won. Which is why I wish he would have chosen someone else.
