You're reading perhaps a bit too much into that. It could be a learned trait (as could heterosexuality) or a congenital environmental influence.
In general, I do support the idea that gay people have identical civil rights of citizenship as other sexual types, e.g., they have the right to vote, free speech, to bear arms, and the same right that I do
not to be beaten up on street corners.
