One of the most shameful parts of Donald Trump's attempted coup is the total lack of punishment for the lawyers, such as Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, who deliberately spread lies about the 2020 election being fraudulent, thus paving the way for the January 6th insurrection.
Here's an article that explores this issue:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-lawyers-sanction-explain/explainer-can-trumps-lawyers-be-disciplined-for-making-false-claims-idUSKBN2851FWAccording to legal experts, the main reason for the lack of action taken against the lawyers is a reluctance by judges and state grievance committees to appear "political." Under ordinary circumstances, this would be understandable. But these people were trying to destroy democracy--indeed, to destroy the U.S. as we know it. To not punish them because you don't want to seem partisan is like not prosecuting someone from Saudi Arabia involved in an al-Qaeda plot against the U.S. because you don't want to seem anti-Arab or anti-Muslim. Not only does the legal profession make itself complicit by its inaction, but it also sends the message that if lawyers want to act similarly in the future--whether on behalf of Trump himself or anyone else--they might as well do so because nothing will happen to them anyway.
