Huh?

What does moderating a debate entail?  What are the rules to it, etc.?

Before we get into this.  We are setting down some rules (and I can't do this today--gotta work then it's my b-day party).  So, I'm forming the ADC.  Atlasian Debating Comission.  Alcon--you're the head (if you choose to accept the appointment).  So you make all the rules, we edit/add/delete what we don't like--we'll have all the official voting on the rules and declaring debates here.  So get to work and do your new job Tongue

Alright, since Alcon doesn't seem interested.  We'll start making up some guidelines.  Go ahead, I gotta go to bed soon.

Guidelines (if no one disagrees and/or has anything else to add):

1) One question at a time (no multi-part questions)

2) Debaters alternate first responses with each question

3) No third-party comments on the question until the debaters have provided their responses.

4) Debaters use a single post to answer the question, unless the moderator asks for each debater to respond to each others comments.

5) Debates limited to five questions.

6) Debaters have 24 hours to respond when it is their turn (since there are days some participants might not be able to log on and/or do not notice that it is their turn).  After 24 hours, the debater who does not respond loses that particular point.

7) At the end of the debates, third-party participants will credit one point to the debater(s) for each question they "won" (please do your best to be non-partisan).  The maximum score a single debater can win is 5 (obviously).  After the last question has been answered, the moderator will asks for people to submit their votes.  Votes must be submitted within 24 hours of the announcement in order to be accepted (votes after the 24 hour period will be ignored).  After that time, the moderator will tally up the points and will declare a winner of the debates.

8.) The questions asked by the moderator will be relevant and appropriate, covering the topics of domestic policy, international policy, government reform, current events, war on terror, etc...  No questions regarding sex, hot communist women, rock-n-roll, etc.

9) The subject line for each debate will be "DEBATE: _______ vs _______" so there is consistency and participants can easily recognize the threads.  The debates will be held in this (the Political Debate) forum.

10) There will be no swearing or name calling during the debates.  Such violations will result in the automatic disqualification of that debater for that particular question, and will not be eligible for points.  (Yes, this means I cannot say "Killary," just as Opie cannot call his challenger a "prude" . . . for example.)

That should cover everything to get through at least the first debate.

Sure, why not.

The list of participants that have expressed interest so far are:
1) Speed of Sound
2) Milk and Cereal
3) Emsworth
4) Dr. Cynic
5) Nym90
6) Boss Tweed
7) jerusalemcar5
8.)Inks.LWC
9) afleitch
10) Bacon King
11) phknrocket1k
12) Jtfdem
13) Truman Democrat
14) Downwiththeleft

Anyone else?

And to tweek the rules a little bit, after everyone has had a chance to debate once, the "winners" from the debate will go to the next round and compete against each other (if you guys are interested in that).

OK, MODU is moderator.  Any objections?
I'm Chairman of the ADC--so if someone has a problem w/ MODU, come to me--if you have suggestions, come to me.  Any objections?
We will make the guidelines MODU has suggested the Atlasian Debating Commission's official rules if there are no objections.
I have one ammendment to the rule: no links may be posted, except for citation.  All information must be typed, written, or quoted by the poster.

Ok, since there have been no objections to the guidelines provided, I will initiate the first debate tomorrow morning.  M&C and Inks will be the first two to face off against each other.  Get your debating caps ready.  Smiley

I'm going to have to decline--until I find out how this internship will affect my schedule (if I take it)--my time on here could be VERY LIMITED.

Ok, with Inks being unable to participate at this time, I have asked Dr. Cynic to fill his position.  Once M&C and Cynic respond, I'll start up the new thread for their debate.

Alcon, think that we can get this one particular thread stickied for future match-up announcements (and as a reminder of the guidelines)?

As of now, I will continue to hold position of Chairman.  If I feel that I am too busy, I will temporarily give my position to MODU and will return after November 7.  Hopefully, after I get all situated, I will be able to participate in a debate.

With no objections, the following is Amendment I:

Judges will not take into consideration any information provided in a link, unless that information was posted by the debater.

this thread's a good read.  a rare sequence of logical responses to previous intelligent posts.  don't find that often here.  too bad it's just a thread about what something ought to be about instead of being a thread about something.

you guys actually gonna start debating something are are you just going to continue to debate about debating something?

Option 2 will be our official logo.
As Chairman, I make a movement to vote on Amendment II:
If a debater has not logged on since the beginning of the debate, the following take place:
If he is to answer the 1st question, he has 48 hours to answer the question, unless he has previously asked to postpone the debate further.
If he is to respond to the question, he has 48 hours after the 1st answer, unles he has previously asked to postopone the debate further.

Assuming no objections, this will become ADC Amendment II.

As Chairman, I make a movement to vote on Amendment III: Voting Booth Regulations:
The moderator will sum all 5 questions up when he opens the polls.
The polls will be open for 72 hours.

I will wait 24 hours, asuming no objections, this will pass as Amendment III.

I have no problems summarizing the questions.

On a side note, I did get one request for some harder questions.  I will see what I can do about that in the next round.

As Chairman, I declair that the following has been approved as Amendment III: Voting Booth Regulations:
The moderator will sum all 5 questions up when he opens the polls.
The polls will be open for 72 hours.

I know it was more than 24 hours that we left that vote open, but due to my internet being down, this is the first I've gotten on.

As Chairman, I make a motion to vote on Ammendment IV: Question Submission:
Any Atlasian member may make a suggestion to the Moderator (currently MODU), which he will take into consideration for the next debate; however, he is not required to use said question.

Assuming no objections, this will pass as Amendment three after 24 hours.
Inks.LWC Chairman of the ADC.
