Why should it be? If it's unpopular, people won't vote for it anyways. If it's popular, a ban just breeds further resentment.

It is banned in Iraq by the coalition of the willing, and former members of the Baath party aren't allowed to particpate in government or attend state universities.

Not only should the Baath Party not be banned, but it should be returned to government, Saddam Hussein reinstated, and apologies and reparations given.

No, it's a hell of a lot better than the current human garbage running the place.

Its supposed to be a democracy, isnt it? Thats the faux reason we've been fighting for three years, isnt it? Banning parties in a democracy, let alone one that isnt ours, seems ridiculously hypocritical.

Sort of like banning the Nazis?

Would you have supported the ban on the Communist Party of Greece from 1949 to 1974?

The Ba'ath was not a political party in the western sense, and this must be made clear at the outset.  In the west, parties represent coherent ideologies and function as conduits between the masses and the elites.  The Ba'ath has never performed these functions in Iraq.

Iraq was a one party state, and in one party states political parties have a very different function than in a democratic state.  Joining a political party in these countries is a means to improving your social status more than advancing your philosophical beliefs.  Being in the party is a prerequisite for many things such as joining the civil service or teaching at a University.

In one party states, the party is a mafia more than anything else.  It doles out favors to its members and punishment to its opponents.  This is deeply corrupt and shouldn't be allowed to go on.
