I do think option 1, but only marginally.  Other masturbation tools would take its place.

To think about it-it's probably the biggest societal invention in the last 50 years--to say that it's mainstream in that time.  Overall, I couldn't imagine this world if it never existed because of the saturation into society.  People vegetate in front of it for hours, and do nothing.  Were people more energetic, or more interesting before its existence? 

If it had not existed, would more books be read and we would have a better educated populace?  Would less be spent on health care due to not needing glasses-or other ill effects on health?  Would presidential campaigns be run different?  Would news biases be different?
