By November 2008, the economy is still humming along as it is now though wage levels have not been raised significantly; and the situation in Iraq is pretty much the way it is now, with killings and assassinations rife as Sunni and Shi'ite thrown themselves upon each other, although with the US troop presence, the country has not descended into full-blown civil war.

New York Senator Hillary Clinton has, as expected, won her party's nomination, and at the Democratic National Convention in Denver she nominates former Virginia Governor Mark Warner as her running-mate in a bid for moderate, swing-voters.  Disgruntled progressive, anti-war Democrats throw their support behind the Green Party ticket headed by Peter Camejo of California and Winona LaDuke.

On the Republican side, Senator John McCain easily won his party's nomination (George Allen decided not to run early in 2007, given the closeness of his re-election victory over Jim Webb), and has nominated former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as his running-mate.  Conservative Republicans and independents especially in the border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California are dissatisfied with his immigration stance, and flock to the Constitution Party ticket headed by Pat Buchanan and his running-mate Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo.
