That Deseret has the most Tongan speakers in proportion to its population is no surprise.  Tonga is the most heavily Mormon nation in the world at about 45% of the population.

I knew Swedish would be high in Minnesota...I suspect the high numbers for New England, Florida and the Pacific coast might be more recent immigrants, rather than descendants of the original migrant wave in the nineteenth century. Btw, the so-called "Emigrant-series" by Vilhelm Moberg, which depicts a group of Swedes migrating to America was recently voted the best Swedish novel of all times.

I think that California, Arizona, and Florida also might represent some secondary retirement migration from northern states, but you are probably correct about the more  recent migration.  One representative only represents 150 speakers.   2000 is getting pretty late for original migrants to be living.  Assuming they were 20+ when they migrated, a 90 YO would have migrated around 1930.  So you are more likely seeing the last of a 2nd generation of those who learned Swedish as a child.

Some support for more recent origins of resident speakers, comparing 1990 speakers with 2000 speakers:

Norwegian   81  56
Swedish       77  68
Finnish         54  40
Danish         36  33

You can see a trend to more proportionality with modern populations, with Norway not being able to supply as many new speakers as its larger neighbors, and Denmark which had less mass migration to the US maintaining its speaker population.

My mother lived with an aunt and uncle, who would speak Swedish when they didn't want her to understand.   The aunt, my grandfather's sister, was born in Sweden and emigrated with her parents.  My grandfather, was born in the United States, and about 20 years younger than his sister, and knew only a few words of Swedish.  But in other families, someone like my grandfather might have learned Swedish.

Somewhat related, the number of German speakers in North Dakota declined from 25,000 to 15,000 between 1990 and 2000.

For groups without a more recent immigration experience, the District of Columbia tends to be a bit overrepresented, which could simply be people associated with the embassy, trade organizations, reporters, etc.  The census is based on residence, and would include people who were just working in the country or going to school.

That and some african blood. Dixie is more like latin america in the makeup of its population than most of the english speaking world but unlike latin america its not openly acknowledged(leading to the lighter blacks/indians who pass for white dissapearing into the general gene pool).
