You call that "two" messages?

Great work, jimrtex! I was wondering where you got that data from. Is there anywhere that shows percentage by state?

There are two tables, each contained in two messages.  The first table is ordered by most frequently used language; the second table is ordered by state with the most speakers, and then national language rank.

Great work, jimrtex! I was wondering where you got that data from. Is there anywhere that shows percentage by state?
On the Census Bureau web-site, click on A-Z index, and then Language.  One of the items is a very large spreadsheet, which has number of speakers for the entire US, by state, by county, and by census tract.

Language data is on the long form, so it is sample data, and it appears that the data has a threshold of 10 persons in a geographical area.  So if there are 2100 Hobbit speakers in the USA, this would show up under the USA.  There would also be a count for each state with 10 or more Hobbit speakers, each county with 10 or more Hobbit speakers, and each census tract with 10 or more Hobbit speakers (a census tract has on the order of 10,000 persons).

As an extreme example, there are 170 Turkmen speakers in the US, but no state has more than 10, so there is no data other than the national data.  On the other extreme, most census tracts in the southwest may have Spanish speakers.

I took all the data at the state and national level and consolidated it into a smaller spreadsheet and that is what I have been working from.

I have just compiled a table that shows the state with the highest concentration for each language:

(State Language X / USA Language X)
------------------------------------------------
(State Total Pop / USA Total Pop)

This shows the leading state for each language based on concentration.  Concentration is ratio of the state's share of a language's speakers relative to its share of the total population.  New Mexico's share of Spanish speakers is 2.684 greater than its share of the total population.  Smaller numbers indicate a language that is distributed across the country, similar to the overall population.  This is in three messages.

This shows the leading state for each language based on concentration.  Concentration is ratio of the state's share of a language's speakers relative to its share of the total population.  This time the data is ordered by state.  That is, it starts off with those languages where Alaska has the highest relative concentration.  All states but Georgia and Kentucky are a leader for at least one language.  3rd of 3 messages.

Spanish - Relative Concentration

This is based on the ratio between the state share of speakers to the national share of speakers.  A ratio of 1.0 would mean the state has the same relative concentration as the country as a whole.

Red indicates concentration greater than the national average (10.7%)
10.0+     90% (none shown)
5.0-10.0 80% (none shown)
2.0-5.0   70%
1.5-2.0   50%
1.0-1.5   30%
Blue indicates concentration less than the national average (10.7%)
0.8-1.0   30%
0.6-0.8   50%
0.4-0.6   70%
0.2-0.4   80%
0.0-0.2   90%

The number represents the ratio for the state, with the decimal point removed.  New Mexico has a concentration 2.7 times the national average.  Numbers are rounded (Illinois is slightly above average, Colorado is slightly below).

They serve to indicate which states with very small populations of the language speakers have been combined together.

Since I was combining small states into a single area for a representative, I was simply using color to distinguish the states (most of them) that had their own representatives.  Surprisingly, it can almost be done with 3 colors  (the clear red, green, and blue).  For the exceptions I would use the powder blue.  So color is simply used to provide distinction.

If a district was multi-state, I used one of the deep colors of red, green, blue.  If it was the case of a small state being attached to a large state, I would usually maintain the base color of the large state.  So if Hawaii did not have enough for its own separate representation, it would be combined with California, and the combined area would be deep green.  If Hawaii was separate, California would be the clear green, and Hawaii clear red.

Two of the maps (so far) were used to illustrate the relative concentration, relative to the national average.  In those cases, color is meaningful.  Red is used to indicate states where use of a particular language is more concentrated than the national average, and blue less concentrated, with the deep red and deep blue used to indicates states that were most extreme (highly or lowly concentrated).
