Was never bothered about who'd win this primary, as long as it's a Democratic pick-up come Fall

Dave

No DINOs for you to endorse like Cuellar?

Quite Smiley. Then this is Massachussetts not Texas. I'm a pragmatist. And when I think of Cueller I think of a Texas Democrat who has the potential to be a statewide candidate one day

Dave

Yeah, it's real hard to win an general election as a Democrat in Texas when no one else is running.

Uh, Cuellar had a general election opponent in 2004, and will have a couple of special election opponents in November, if I'm not mistaken.

I really, really hope that Cuellar runs against Cornyn in 2008 for Senate.

He will lose, and then we can get a real Democrat into his seat in Congress.

Not gonna happen, though it's a nice thought.

Define a real Democrat? A Democrat does not have to be some uber-left liberal dove, you know

Good lord man, it has nothing to do with being dovish/hawkish! A real Democrat is someone who votes in the best interests of the working man and the middle class.

Cuellar is absolutely horrible on economic and trade issues. He is the top corporate Democrat in the House. No Democrat does more to screw the working man than Henry Cuellar.

His free trade votes represent the views along the border of South Texas.  Look at the other votes of the South Texas border Democrats.

What I meant to say is that I supported Cueller because I see him as being a viable statewide candidate in Texas one day. Any Democrat can be a statewide candidate, whether they can win statewide in Texas is another question and I think Cueller could

Dave

Two problems
1. Cuellar ran as a Democrat because only a Democrat can get elected in that district
2. Chet Edwards manages to win in a much more Republican area of Texas (went 70% for Bush in 2004), and is more liberal.

As for SamSpade's comments, this was all before the court changed the districts, so they're not at all relevant.

How are they not relevant?  The past is not relevant, not the future.

Chet Edwards wins because of his regional ties and because the Republicans over the past few elections have nominated total right-wing nuts (worse than Downwithdaleft).
