Why would a business refuse to sell products to unemployed people?  Unless I'm reading the question wrong, which is entirely possible, as I don't really understand it.

I don't even know how a store would know a person's employment status for the most part.

I can understand a store refusing to extend credit to the unemployed, or turn down an over limit credit card, but cold hard cash looks the same whether a person is employed or not.

(do the idle rich count as unemployed?)

Well, it can be done by demanding a card which is given only to people which are employed. And this is not my invention, there is such a supermarket in the city where I live. While this measure is aimed against unemployed, it also affects pensioners.

There's no such proof of employment in the US, so it's not possible.

I also don't see the point. How exactly does that help them? It's just less customers.

They are probably afraid that unemployed people are going to shoplift.  They also had some other stupid rules: purchases only over a certain amount, buying only in large quantities etc. Strangely the supermarket is a member of an international chainv - the German Metro and I'm fairly certain they don't do the same thing in Germany.

What, they're going to ask for your employment card before you enter?  Unrealistic.

All of these god-awful threads belong in forum community, if not the trash.

This is America, not Germany.

America is not a fascist country, except for the certain parts of Kentucky where they talk about something called "New America."  Most of us just assume these people are in-bred, poorly educated hicks who were shaving in the 4th grade, but rumor has it they might be dangerous if provoked by bushes.
