I'm curious if anyone else here has been there and what they think of it.

I find it scary. It gives me the creeps even to drive through there. it's like a cult almost. no I'm not exaggerating. No bars, no one ever mows their lawn on Sundays, and you could probably find every person in town at church. This is as far as I'm concerned the most conservative part of the country, yes, more conservative than anywhere in Utah or the Deep South. Most people in Des Moines and the eastern part of the state probably like to pretend it doesn't exist or that it's part of Nebraska or South Dakota, even though it is far more conservative than anywhere in those states, and that's saying a lot.

The reason is the place was settled by Dutch Calvinists and Germans from hardcore conservative Lutheran sects. Pretty much everyone there belongs to ultra conservative churches of those religions, and it almost seems like a cult.

Sorry to hear that christianity gives you the creeps.

I thought you said that rural lutheran churches were not conservative?

Now you are saying they are cults?

This area in IA is not that much different that southern MN.

One northwest county in Iowa went for Bauer during the Iowa Caucuses so I'd say it's pretty conservative and it MIGHT BE more conservative than Utah.

Missouri Synod ones sure are, which is mainly proliferic there. Didn't you notice I said hardcore conservative Luthern sects? I was saying that ELCA churches tend not to be conservative, since I'm an ECLA.

And while Sioux City is much like southern Minnesota, that's not what i'm talking about, but rather the rural counties such as Lyon, Sioux, O'Brien, Plymouth and Osceola, most notably Lyon and Sioux. They might be similar geographically, but culturally they are MUCH different from anywhere in Minnesota. Just go look at their vote totals especially in the caucuses like Phil mentioned. I just brought this up because I was talking with a friend who lived who knew someone who lived there for awhile who kept mentioning how bizarre most people there are. Apparentely there was some controversy in the primaries with the Republican state senator from the area facing a primary challenge. This guy called gays "people against nature" and "in violation of natural law" and then went on to "out" a closeted Democratic legislature. Strange strange place.

Western Iowa does vote very Conservative. That's all I could tell you...
"More Conservative than Utah" doesn't mean more Conservative than anywhere in Utah, but just more Conservative than that state's average?

western Iowa in general would not be considered more conservative than Utah, but the far northwestern corner IS. you have really have to be there to see how strange of a place it is, but you can look up how it votes here to get an idea.

Lyon, Sioux, O'Brien, Plymouth and Osceola

I have been to everyone of those counties. Very nice places, but driving to them is nothing but miles of corn fields.
