I think Lampson would've, though narrowly and with under 50%. Lots of Republicans disgusted with DeLay would vote for the Libertarian.

Still the GOP would've done even worse nationwide, as DeLay would be more visible and easy to tie to GOP opponents.

DeLay would've done slightly worse than Sekula Gibbs did.

DeLay would have won easily. I believe if the Republican had been on the ballot she would have won this. DeLay, despite his problems would have won this district in a walk. This is like suggesting Charlie Rangel could be beaten in his home district only in reverse. I doubt you would ever make that case.

It would have been close, and I think that DeLay might have pulled it off, simply because the district would try and keep another Republican in office. It would probably spur a recall as well.

But, if he stayed in, I would agree that it would sealed a lot more fates for other Republicans who won in very tight elections.

Exactly. DeLay would have, probably, survive - and Dems would have taken over another 10-15 districts elsewhere.

It's a 64% Bush district, Rangel's district was well over 90% Kerry, not really a comparison, plus DeLay only got 55% then as well. And the whole reason DeLay stepped down was due to concerns he would've lost. Like I said, the Libertarian would've taken a lot of his votes.

Slightly higher % than Sekula-Gibbs, Libertarian gets many more votes.  Still would've lost.

No contest on this part... well, if she'd had gotten onto the ballot without any major legal wrangling, that is.

No. He stepped down only because he didn't want to be tossed by the voters, and these were the only alternatives left.

yeah i agree with that. I think there's also the very real possibility that Delay would have been expelled or forced to resign in order to defend himself in court after the election.

Delay might have won.  I mean it is Texas and all.
