notice the word 'sane'.  so i would think zell miller is excluded from the discussion.

joe lieberman is an independent.

ben nelson has the audacity of hope...and is just an awful person anyway.

cant really think of any.

Nelson is a conservative, but he's a Democrat. If he didn't switch parties back in early 2005 when the Republican brand was in far better shape, he's sure as heck not going to do so now. I'd assume that to some extent, his views are reflective of those of his constituents, and his being in the majority party likely helps them.

Lieberman is a possibility, but his stump presence is stultifying, he's almost as old as McCain, and his liberal views on social issues would likely put off a great part of the Republican base, causing some to defect to Barr or Baldwin. Plus his views on the war and Iran are pretty extreme.

Mike Bloomberg isn't a democrat, but he might be the type you're thinking of.

I wonder if William Cohen would ever agree to be McCain's running mate.  Yes, I know, he's a Republican, but he was also Clinton's defense secretary, so that's probably about the closest McCain could ever come to picking a Democrat.  But it won't be Cohen.  Too many problems there.

I don't know if I would have worded it this way, but I agree

Its looking like a democratic year, why would anyone jump to be the number 2 man on the currently floundering ship?

obviously most politicians are opportunistic.

if the gop's prognosis improves, im sure there be at least a couple of sane democrats that would consider being mccain's running mate if asked.

How much it would have to improve for that to happen would seem to be the question.

^^^^

Unless there is a super duper long serving blue dog democrat in a heavily republican district that has been supporting republican positions for years and just never got around to switching parties, I can't see one teaming up with McCain as a VP.  Joe-mentum is still a democrat (Mitty, you need to correct your initial post), so he won't sign up as a VP on a Republican ticket.  If McCain was running as an Independent, then maybe the two could have teamed together.

Besides, McCain will probably lose a third of the RNC support to a conservative independent candidate in protest if he were to tap a democrat.

When was the last time anyone picked a member of the opposing party for anything higher than Secretary of War/Defense?

Oh...1864?  (Ignoring when the Democrats nominated a Republican in 1872, of course)

Doesn't mean it can't happen this year, but considering the lack of anyone leaping out at us (excluding Lieberman)...
