Suppose NH Senator Bob Smith never leaves the GOP in 1999. He continues to run for Preisdent as a Republican and edges out John McCain in NH. He gains momentum and secures the nomination.

Smith selects Michigan Governor John Engler as his running mate.

Smith and Engler are up against Gore/Lieberman in the general election.

How does it play out? Maps please!

He did endorse Kerry in '04. His reasoning was over the deficit.

smith wanted to run for the senate from florida in 04.  the bushes, both jeb and george, wanted mel martinez.  that may have factored into smiths endorsement decision.
