It's amazing how quickly the conventional wisdom can change.  A month ago, many pundits were arguing that, despite the fact that much of the conservative base was dissatisfied with the three GOP frontrunners ("Rudy McRomney"), the party would likely be stuck with one of those candidates as the nominee.  None of the other candidates was strong enough to take the nomination, and, given the accelerated pace of the race, it might already be too late for additional candidates to join the race and be viable.  That's what many people were thinking.  Now we have all this buzz about Fred Thompson, and many people are going so far as to say that, if he does enter the race, he would be the frontrunner.

But consider the fact that, up until about three or four weeks ago, Thompson wasn't even on anyone's radar screen, as people didn't think there was any chance that he was running.  Yet now look at the position that he's in.  Doesn't that suggest that there could be other "Fred Thompsons" out there?  Other potential candidates who no one currently thinks will be running, but might come out a month from now or two months from now, and say "I'm thinking of seeking the Republican nomination for president" and they'll generate a similar buzz?

Maybe Thompson will run and fill the "ideological void" left open by Giuliani, McCain, and Romney.  But if, say, Thompson were to announce by the end of April that he's decided that he doesn't want to put himself through a national campaign, and he will not run, then what's to stop someone else from jumping into the race to fill that void themselves?  Or is Thompson that unique a figure that he alone can challenge the current crop of candidates?  If Thompson doesn't run, will the GOP inevitably be left with just the current crop of candidates, plus maybe Gingrich and Hagel, or could someone else be added to the mix as well?

Everyone on both sides said the 2008 race was missing a "fresh face" and they mentioned the non-fresh face Al Gore as the only potential new thing to the race. Then, he decided against running...so there seemed to be no fresh face. Fred Thompson has become the fresh face of the 2008 race.

Yes, but what I'm asking is, if Fred Thompson doesn't run, is there someone else out there who could jump in the race and fill that same niche on the GOP side?  Or is Fred Thompson really that unique, that he's the only one who could do it?

Jeb could, but would be much less viable for the general unless George has an exceptional eighth year. I mean really exceptional.
