New Election: 2004 West Virginia Secretary of State General Election Results

This race is mainly notable since Hechler was 90 years old during this campaign. And Hechler still almost won.

Betty Ireland could run for the Senate in 2008.

Betty Ireland could run for the Senate in 2008.

She only just beat a senile and divisive idiot (who's various primary challenges to Rahall have frequently been genuinely amusing) who, essentially, runs for office as a form of therepy.

Oh and lol at the urban-rural split on that map Grin

What are you talking about?  Bob Byrd wasn't running in this race.

The results for the six main WV statewide races are now up.

In case you wanted to figure out more specifics on how badly Kerry lagged behind West Virginia Democrats

Braxton County, WV
Governor: 75/23 Manchin (Dem)
SoS: 61/39 Hechler (Dem)
Treasurer: 79/21 Perdue (Dem)
At. Gen: 63/37 McGraw (Dem)
Auditor: 77/23 Gainer (Dem)
President: 50/49 Kerry (Dem)

Then again, 30% of West Virginia Democrats voted for Bush. While 82% of WV Dems and 38% of WV Repubs voted for Manchin.

And 90% of WV Dems voted for Byrd in 2006.

And a general election where the nominee is a 90 year old can only be preceded by a primary where that man won 26% to get the nomination.

https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?year=2004&off=7&elect=1&fips=54&f=0

And 5 candidates won a county too.

Overall

Hechler- 26
Tennant- 25
Oliverio- 20
Pritt- 16
Bailey- 7
Acord- 4
Dougherty- 3

Good times

IRV would probably be the best in party primaries.

Minneapolis is going to start using IRV for city elections, although that's actually a case where it's not needed (city and county elections in Minnesota are non-partisan and done using a French run-off type system.)
