president reagan doesnt run for reelection due to age and health concerns.  vice president bush easily wins the republican nomination.  he choose wyoming congressman and former ford chief of staff, dick cheney as his running mate.

young colorado senator gary hart beats out a crowded field to win the democrat nomination.  he choose another young upstart, new york governor mario cuomo as his running mate.

bush/cheney vs. hart/cuomo 1984.

discuss w/maps.

The economy would have still been as stellar as it was in Reagan's 1984 run, but Hart would have been able to keep it closer.  But not by much.

It would have been enough to kill Cuomo's career, not that he made much of it post-1984 anyway.

that is actually quite a big improvement over mondale.

id also mention iowa as a possiblity.  this was in the middle of the farm crisis.  reagan/bush policies werent very popular in the upper middle west.

other than that, your map looks reasonable.  oh wait, i just saw connecticut.  bush would have won ct, rather easily.
